Japan is an aging society and has conducted many studies on how to prevent dementia in the elderly. According to a report recently published by Japan’s “Daily News” (January 2006), copying Buddhist scriptures can play a good role in preventing dementia. Transcribed Buddhist sutras are abbreviated as writings in Japan. It was discovered by nurses at a nursing home in Yamaguchi, Japan.
Some senior citizens who believe in Buddhism often write Buddhist scriptures in nursing homes as an interest. The nurses found that these old people generally have a good spirit and good memory. Afterwards, Professor Kawashima Takata of Tohoku University in Japan led a graduate student and tested 1,000 elderly people and recorded their cerebral blood flow during various activities. Researchers use the elderly as a benchmark when doing simple things. When the brain is active, it is positive 3, and when the brain rests, it is negative 3, and it is divided into 11 levels. The study found that when the old people wrote the Buddhist scriptures, the activity of the anterior lobe and the parietal lobe reached the highest level of positive 3 . In the past, it was widely believed that guessing riddles was helpful for preventing dementia and did not achieve a satisfactory score in the test.
Professor Kawashima introduced that the old copying of the scriptures not only can move the brain, but also a kind of spiritual comfort, which is beneficial to the elderly to maintain a good attitude towards life. Before writing the Buddhist scriptures, attention was paid to washing hands, cleaning the tabletop, etc., which are all good hygiene habits. When writing the Buddhist scriptures, they were all more focused. This is the situation where the old man seldom seems to be fully focused on using the brain. Psychologically, the old man feels that he is doing something meaningful and that he can protect the safety of his children and they feel happy in their hearts. Therefore, researchers believe that, in all aspects, copying Buddhist scriptures is beneficial to the physical and mental health of the elderly.
It is reported that many Japanese department stores have developed sales of ancillary products that “write defensive dementia,” including large Buddhist scriptures, brushes, and rice paper for the elderly, at the request of the majority of elderly people (Of course, regular notebooks. Also completely possible).
